Young people can now apply for up to £2,000 from the Cash Panel, a group which helps fund activities and opportunities for young people across Bolton.
The panel, run by Bolton Council since 2006, is made up of young people who assess and interview each application based on the positive impact it will have on the local community.
Those aged between 13 and 19 can apply for the money, while those with additional needs or a disability can be up to 25 years old. Looked after children and young carers can apply for money for an individual project.
The fund provides young people with the opportunity to design activities for themselves as well as gaining key skills in decision making, managing budgets and delivering a project.
Projects that benefitted from last year’s funding included Bolton North District Explorers, who received £1061.52. This money was used to buy essential equipment to enable young people to complete their Duke of Edinburgh expeditions.
The Impact project, run with support from Lancashire Wildlife Trust, has also received £1400 thanks to the cash panel. They used the funds to restore the garden of an old people’s home in Breightmet. The young people involved worked very hard to create a garden area including hand-made benches, a rockery garden and somewhere to plant vegetables.
Councillor Ebrahim Adia, Bolton Council’s Executive Member for Children’s Services, said: “Since 2006, the Cash Panel has helped young people across Bolton to set up projects to help their local community.
“Not only do projects help the young people to get involved in their local area and learn some valuable skills, the benefit can be felt by many of the borough’s residents, as was the case with the work done by the Impact project. I hope that the panel receives a host of interesting and worthwhile applications.”
The deadline for completed application forms is 5pm on Monday 18 October. Application forms can be requested from Cash Panel, c/o Carol Adams, Connexions 3rd Floor, Paderborn House, Bolton, BL1 1JW, or email Carol Adams for an online version of the form.
