A bridge leading to Smithills Open Farm will be closed for three months for essential repairs.
Major work to improve Raveden Clough bridge will start on January 5, 2015 for approximately 13 weeks, dependent on weather conditions.
The work is necessary to strengthen, repair and preserve the bridge access. In order to do the work as safely and quickly as possible, the bridge will be closed to all motorists and pedestrians.
Vehicles travelling to Smithills Open Farm will need to access an alternative route via Sharples Park and Moss Lea roads.
Once work is complete the bridge will reopen to motorists and full access to the farm will be restored.
Bolton Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Cllr David Chadwick, said: “This is a major scheme which, once it’s finished, will improve access to the farm.
“However, we will need to close the bridge in order for us to do the work as quickly and efficiently as possible.
“We appreciate this is going to cause some major disruption and every effort will be made to keep this to a minimum.
“We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused to local residents, businesses and visitors to the farm.
“We will make every effort to progress the improvements as quickly as possible in an effort to get the job done quickly.”
