Apprentice semi-finalist and market trader Adam Corbally is coming to Bolton to give his backing to Love Your Local Market fortnight.
Adam, from Derbyshire, is supporting the national campaign, and will talk to aspiring traders, young people, and entrepreneurs in Bolton on launch day, Saturday, June 23.
He said: “I set up in business on Glossop Market at 19 selling fruit and veg, which has made me incredibly passionate about markets and made me back this campaign. I want to come to Bolton in particular because the town is particularly proud of its markets. Bolton has got not one but two award winning markets so the local council must be doing something right.”
Bolton Market is one of Britain’s oldest food markets and last year won Best Food Market in the prestigious BBC Radio 4 Food and Farming Awards. Westhoughton Market recently won Best Indoor Market in the National Association of British Market Authority awards.
The council also recently announced a £4.5 million investment in Bolton Market.
Adam added: “I left school with no formal qualifications and the message I want to get across in my talks is that today it could be fruit and veg but tomorrow the world. I’m not going to stand up and talk about how good I am. The talks will be very informal, with an introduction followed by questions and answers.”
Adam now runs his fruit and veg business as a wholesale company with a staff of six, and also manages a portfolio of housing properties.
The talks will be held in the 10am, 12pm and 2pm in the Town Hall. Places are free, but are on a first come, first served basis.
Bolton Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Services, Councillor Akhtar Zaman, said: “We’re very pleased that Adam is coming to Bolton. He’ll be speaking about his time on the show, everything that’s good about market trading and how to succeed in business.
"Markets play a very important role in the heart of the local community, not only for retail but they are a valuable community asset. We’re fully behind this campaign and we will be creating a pop-up market on Deansgate on June 23, and on Victoria Square from June 25 to June 29 for aspiring traders.”
Chief Executive of the National Association of British Markets Authorities, Graham Wilson, added: “This is the biggest national markets event for a generation and there is a real opportunity for markets to show what they can do for job creation and bringing town centres to life.”
Celebrity chef Simon Rimmer is also supporting Bolton’s markets and will cook a range of dishes in the Bolton Market kitchen and in the town centre on June 23.
