Alcohol awareness week

People in Bolton are invited to chat to health experts about their drinking habits at a series of events.

The events will take place throughout the borough as part of national alcohol awareness week.

This year’s theme is “conversations about alcohol” and experts will be on hand to discuss people’s concerns, clear up any misconceptions, and generally provide information and facts about safe levels of drinking alcohol.

Information stalls will be situated in the Market Place Shopping Centre, between 10am and 4pm, from Monday, November 18 to Thursday, November 21; at The Royal Bolton Hospital, from 10am to 4.30pm, on Monday, November 18; and at Asda, Burnden Park, from 10am to 4pm, on Thursday, November 21.

On Friday, November 22 there will be an open day at the borough’s Intervention Delivery Centre in St Andrew’s Court, from 11am to 1pm. There will be an opportunity to meet staff who work in alcohol services and take part in interactive workshops to find out what it’s like to tackle alcohol-related issues.

Bolton Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health, Councillor Sufrana Bashir-Ismail, said: “There can be a stigma attached to alcohol services, and people assume they are solely for the benefit of those who are alcohol-dependent. There are also a lot of misconceptions about safe levels of drinking and the effects alcohol can have on people’s health and wellbeing.

“The idea of holding information stalls in an informal environment aims to break through any stereotypes and provide people with the facts around alcohol and their personal drinking habits. There will be easy and practical tips on how to cut down on alcohol consumption for those who need them and information about potential health risks linked to excessive drinking.”

Alcohol services in Bolton are provided by Bolton Integrated Drug and Alcohol Services and commissioned by Bolton Council.
