Warning on insulation cold calling

Bolton Council’s trading standards is urging residents to be vigilant about traders cold calling and offering loft and cavity wall insulation.
 
Reports have been received of companies door-knocking and charging for insulation that residents can get free of charge.
 
In one instance, a consumer was told the insulation works were free but only for that particular week.

Bolton Council, in partnership with the Energy Savings Trust, recently launched the ‘Get Me Toasty’ scheme and is urging residents to take advantage of this scheme.
 
This scheme offers free cavity wall and loft insulation to all owner-occupiers and privately-renting residents in the borough, regardless of age or income.
 
The sole installer delivering this locally is British Gas, whose staff follow clear procedures in how they contact residents.
 
Before door-knocking an area a letter will be posted through residents’ doors introducing the ‘Get Me Toasty’ scheme..
 
When door-to-door visits are later carried out, British Gas representatives will always carry ID badges and refer to the ‘Toasty’ campaign.
 
Bolton Council’s Executive Member for Housing, Councillor Ismail Ibrahim, said: “We have been receiving complaints about other firms cold calling at homes, offering similar services, but at a cost which is causing confusion to residents.
 
“These firms are not part of the Get Me Toasty scheme. Typically they will demand access to inspect your property on-the-spot, and there will also be charges for the products they install.
 
“We would encourage local residents to take advantage of the Get Me Toasty scheme. This is the only council approved scheme offering the chance to get loft and cavity wall insulation free of charge. Not only will this enable residents to make significant savings on their domestic fuel bills, but it will also help Bolton to become a more energy efficient, greener borough.”
 
“If you do receive a visit, please check that any cold callers are British Gas representatives. They will always carry clear identification.”
