Get ready for winter
There are a number of practical things that individuals and communities can do to prepare for a wide range of winter weather conditions including cold, ice, snow, high winds and flooding. Click here for advice about staying warm and well in your home.
A flooding event could damage or destroy your property and flood water may contain sewerage and other contaminants which might be a risk to health. By planning ahead and taking precautions you can help reduce the impact that a flood may have on your household.
It is important that you and your family plan ahead so you all know what to do before a flood happens, what to do during a flooding event and what to do afterwards.
The Environment Agency website contains lots of information and advice about how you can prepare for floods.
Each full route grit covers all the main roads and bus routes and it takes several hours to complete. This gritting round covers 317 miles of Bolton, which is just over half of the total road network. A seek and destroy route covers the high roads.
Bolton Council’s website provides daily winter gritting updates and residents can find out if they are on a gritting route by visiting http://www.bolton.gov.uk/residents.
There are also 533 grit bins around the borough. These bins are for the use of residents in that area only, and the grit is for use on the road and footpaths, not for use on driveways.
Grit is also available to purchase from the Heaton Fold garden centre off Chorley New Road.
The latest information about when we go out gritting can be found here.
We grit the footpaths in Bolton town centre and the other town centres around the borough, and during snowy conditions staff will clear snow from bus stops on main roads and near key locations eg train station and bus station.
Maps showing the roads which we grit and the location of grit bins can be found using the link on the right hand side.
Headteachers will make decisions about whether to open their schools or not depending upon the conditions. The latest information about those open or closed will appear here.
