Recycle your Christmas tree
This year, Bolton Council is working in partnership with Bolton Hospice to recycle real Christmas trees. For a minimum donation of £7.50, Bolton Hospice will arrange to have your tree collected and recycled. Visit the Bolton Hospice website (see link on the right hand column) or call 01204 663055 before Wednesday 4 January 2012 to arrange your collection.
Alternatively, Christmas trees can be recycled free of charge at your local Household Waste Recycling Centre. To find out where your nearest centre is and for opening times over the festive season, visit the recycleforgreatermanchester website.
Green tips for Christmas
This Christmas, make sure you do your bit to help reduce the amount of waste produced over the festive period.
It’s estimated that in the UK alone, the amount of wrapping paper thrown away each Christmas could stretch to the moon if each sheet was laid end to end.
So, follow these useful tips to reduce your waste:
- Try using gift bags instead of wrapping paper. As well as removing the hassle of wrapping awkward shaped items, gift bags can be reused again and again.
- There is about a 25% increase in leftover food during the Christmas period. Visit http://www.lovefoodhatewaste.com/ for leftover recipe ideas and don’t forget to use your food waste recycling caddies too.
- When you take down your Christmas cards on the twelfth night, don’t forget to recycle them by putting them in your beige recycling bin.
- Recycle your real Christmas tree. For a minimum donation of £7.50 Bolton Hospice will arrange to have your Christmas tree collected and recycled. Visit www.boltonhospice.org.uk/christmastree for more information. Alternatively take your tree to your nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre to get it recycled for free.
- Donate old items that have been replaced by new gifts to charities. The new British Heart Foundation furniture and electrical store on Knowlsey Street will take unwanted, working electrical items.
