A dropped kerb crossing (also known as a verge crossing, footway crossing, vehicular crossing, crossover or access) is required when you want to take a vehicle across the verge or footway (pavement) to access your land.
Legal considerations
Planning permission is not usually required for such work, apart from in the following circumstances:
- The property involved has the frontage directly on to a classified road
- The property involved is a listed building
- The property involved is other than a house for a single family. This includes flats, maisonettes and commercial or industrial premises
How to apply
If it appears that a property fits into one of the above classifications and planning permission is required, you should contact the council and seek planning permission.
Otherwise please contact us using the contact details above.
Please note
The construction of a vehicle crossing by Bolton Council does not give the occupier of the premises any particular rights, except to drive across the footway to gain access to his or her property with a private or light goods motor car. The crossing itself is still part of the public highway.
From the date that the council accepts the completed crossing, they will assume responsibility for it's maintenance at no cost to the occupier, apart from any damage caused by illegal use by heavy goods vehicles etc.
If you decide to go ahead with construction you must remove the fence, wall or hedge within the property at the place where the crossing will be located before construction can take place.
What happens next?
We will check the viability of the proposal, mark the footpath/kerb edge with yellow paint and provide you with a written quotation for the construction.
