School - supervised medication

Schools – health and safety

Asset Management and Planning Unit (AMU) in Children’s Services can provide assistance to schools on health and safety matters.  We maintain an up to date Health and Safety Manual available from the link to the right.  Printing of the document is not recommended because of its size and because it is regularly updated.

On behalf of the Council, working closely with Occupational Safety and Health specialist service (OSHSS) and Corporate Property Services (CPS), AMU also has a role in ensuring that schools are undertaking their responsibilities in relation to H&S.  We understand that headteachers and others within schools have many duties and we are therefore always willing to assist by providing or obtaining guidance or training as identified by the school.

Professional advice is available from Occupational Safety and Health specialist service (OSHSS) within the Chief Executive’s Department.  OSHSS undertake a Health and Safety Audit of all schools on a three year cycle. OSHSS also offer a Service Level Agreement to schools for a more comprehensive support and advice service, details of which can be accessed from the link to the right.

Technical advice is available from Corporate Property Services (CPS) in Corporate Resources Department.  They assist schools to comply with all relevant legislative requirements, providing guidance and implementing work such as boiler maintenance, legionella testing and fire risk assessments.  They have a monitoring role on behalf of the Council in relation to legislative compliance and building maintenance.  They offer a Service Level Agreement to schools.

All accidents and incidents which occur in schools must be reported to governors and to AMU at the end of each term.  Guidance is provided at the link to the right.
