School - home schooling

Home Educated pupil

Elective Home Education (EHE)

The information below is to offer advice and support to those parents/carers in the Bolton borough who are considering or have made the decision to provide a home based education for their child/children instead of mainstream schooling.

The Service

  • The service works with parent/carers in partnership;
  • We provide advice and support, including GCSE's, resources etc;
  • We have opportunities to meet other home educators through arranged events, i.e. Smithills Farm and Ten Pin Bowling

The Law

The responsibility for a child’s education rests with the parents/carers.
In England, education is a child's right and the parent/carer must ensure that this happens between the ages of  5-17. This can take place at 'school' or 'otherwise'.

What should I do if I wish to home educate?

If you are withdrawing your child from school and he/she is of statutory school age, you are required to write to your child’s school stating that you wish to educate your child at home.
The school will inform the EHE service that you have chosen to be responsible for the education of your child at home and you will be contacted within four weeks; however; if you have not heard from the EHE service, please contact them on the information provided. The school will no longer be responsible for your child's education.

What if my child has special educational needs?

Please see the EHE booklet for more information regarding special educational needs.

I have de-registered my child - what happens next?

The EHE service will contact you and offer you a home visit or a meeting at the Castle Hill Centre to offer advice and support in developing the educational programme for your child/children.

Funding

When you as the parent or carer decide to home educate you assume full financial responsibility for the education of your child.  There are a number of sources of advice and practical assistance and the DCSF provides an information sheet on elective home education. (Please see the link on the right hand side)

Please note that the EHE Policy and the EHE booklet are currently under review.

For more information regarding EHE, please contact the service on the contact information provided.
