Certified copies of birth, marriage and death certificates can be obtained in one of four ways.
- By calling into the office (address on the right, Merehall) Monday to Friday from 9.00-4.00pm. The certificates can be processed whilst you wait as priority applications for a cost of £15.00 per copy or you can leave them to be either posted out first class or collected the next working day for £10.00 per copy.
- By telephoning and paying with a debit card. The last payment must be processed before 4.00pm. This costs £10.00 per copy and they will be despatched from the office the following day by second class post.
- By applying online via the links above right on this page. The fee for this will be £10.00 per certificate and they will be posted by first class mail the next working day.
- By sending a cheque or postal order for £10.00 made payable to Bolton MBC to us (please click on the contact details tab above). Once payment is received the certificate will be posted the next working day by first class post and could take up to 5 working days to reach you.
Please note that if you are applying for certificates for a very recent birth, death or marriage then different fees may apply. Please contact the office if the event took place within the last few months for advice.
You should provide enough information in the application to positively identify the entry. Generally full name/s and exact date of birth, marriage or death is sufficient. However, if you are researching family history and can supply only the year of the birth, marriage or death then wherever possible you should try to provide additional information in the application.
We hold records of births, deaths and marriages from 1837 to date. The records only cover the areas of Bolton, Farnworth, Little Lever, Blackrod, Westhoughton and Horwich. Copies can be obtained from these records for which there is a fee (see above).
For those applying from overseas, payment needs to made in Sterling drawn on an British bank account or an international money order. We try as far as possible to deal with applications as soon as they are received.
If we are unable to match our records with applications we will return the fee.
