Why volunteer?
If you have some spare time and would like to support your local library service, we can offer several great opportunities to volunteer.
Learn new skills in a supportive environment.
Gain useful work experience whilst helping others.
Add to your C.V. - we will be happy to act as a reference in the future.
As a young volunteer working towards a Duke of Edinburgh Award or a Youth Achievement Award, we can validate your logbook.
What are the opportunities?
For adult volunteers…
Computer mentor: In this role you will help library customers with IT queries and provide one to one support. Share your knowledge and skills to ensure everyone gains confidence using IT.
Library link: As a volunteer you will act as a vital link between the library and the reader, delivering books to people who are unable to visit their local library because of mobility or long term health problems.
Young volunteers
Any young person aged between 14 and 25 can apply to volunteer with the library. The only exception is the Headspace Book Bar Waiter role. This has been specifically designed for people aged 11 to 19.
Computer mentor: As a young volunteer you can be a computer mentor like the adults providing one to one support to people who are new to computers.
Storytime host: As a volunteer you will host storytime sessions with young children, reading stories to them and helping to build their enthusiasm for books.
Children’s book group assistant: You will help plan activities for the meetings of the book group, choose suitable books and develop the reading of young children.
Headspace book bar waiters: Headspace provides a space for young people to relax with a drink while they read, surf the net and exchange information. As a volunteer, you will provide visitors with drinks and help them pick their ideal read.
Summer reading challenge assistant: This exciting project will involve you in inspiring young children to read during the summer holidays, challenging and leading them to new experiences. You may also help out with storytelling sessions and arts and craft activities.
What training and support will I get?
On-the-job training: You will be invited to your chosen library to meet the staff and familiarise yourself with the building. You will receive training that is relevant to your particular volunteering interest.
Help with expenses: We will pay your public transport costs or give you a petrol allowance to cover travel to and from your chosen library.
How to apply
