The Housing and Public Health Unit is committed to improving and protecting the health, safety and well being of the residents within Bolton. The unit also tackles poor property standards within the private rented sector and aims to improve the management standards of landlords operating within the borough.
Private Sector Housing
The unit provides advice, information and enforces relevant legislation on many aspects of private sector housing including:
- Housing disrepair and safety hazards (Housing, Health and Safety Rating System),
- Houses in Multiple Occupation – flats, bedsits, shared houses etc.
- Houses in Multiple Occupation – mandatory licensing,
- Selective licensing,
- Empty homes,
- Accommodation certificates for immigration purposes,
- Referrals to partner agencies – home fire safe risk assessments, Warm Front grants etc.
Public Health
The unit deals with a wide range of complaints and requests for assistance and advice in relation to:
- Accumulations of waste on private land,
- Statutory Nuisances – e.g. damp being caused between neighbouring properties,
- Drainage problems (excluding public sewers, which are responsibility of United Utilities),
- Filthy and verminous properties,
- Swimming pool sampling,
- Private water supply sampling
