What is Crucial Crew?
Crucial Crew is a multi-agency safety event aimed at year 6 (10 to 11 year olds), designed to provide children with life skills that may in the future, keep themselves and others safe. This is achieved by making them aware of the dangers and hazards that can occur in everyday life. It is generally accepted that children start to become more independent at this age and are often expected to cope increasingly on their own and deal with changes in their lives – such as a move to secondary school. The advantage of this scheme is that it takes the children out of the school environment, disregards ability and ensures that everyone gets involved and learns whilst having fun. The ethos of this event is to help the children learn from their interactive experiences, incorporating the motto, “Tell Me and I Might Forget, Show Me and I Might Remember, Let Me Do It and I Will Understand”!
They learn by experience to:
• React correctly to dangerous and threatening situations,
• Avoid becoming a victim of accident or crime,
• Understand the role that the emergency and support services play, how and when to contact them,
• Gain life skills that may help them, and others to be safe,
• Be aware of the consequences of their own actions and how they may impact upon others.
A ‘Crucial Crew’ consists of approximately 8-10 agencies, jointly putting together an interactive and fun safety event aimed at Year 6 children. A typical event will consist of between 40-80 children, who will be split into teams of 8-10. (Each event lasts for a morning or afternoon session). Each team will visit an agency’s interactive scenario and be given a 10 minute safety message whilst at that station. They will then move to the next station until all have been seen.
Where does it happen?
Bolton Crucial Crew operates for four weeks during term time in each academic year, during this time more than 2,500 Bolton school children will attend. We are able to use the facilities for northern area of greater Manchester at the Bury Interchange with transport for our schools being provided by the organisation.
Dates and Times
This year the weeks will take place between 1st. February and the 5th March 2010 with a week off for half term. Sadly again this year we have more schools wishing to attend than we can accommodate, the schools are contacted by ourselves and invited to attend, so allocation for sessions has been on a first come first served basis.
