The area covered by the Countryside Service has expanded from the original Croal Irwell River Valley project set up in the 1970s. It now takes in many more of the countryside areas throughout the borough including Smithills Country Park, the West Pennine Moors and local nature reserves which are managed in partnership with the Bolton Wildlife Project.
Teams of Countryside Rangers work closely with local communities, creating opportunities that allow you to get involved with exciting and innovative projects and help shape your local countryside
Why not work with one of the groups of Voluntary Wardens at our countryside sites? As a Volunteer you can take part in many different activities according to your interests and abilities.
Countryside conservation work such as tree planting, hedge-laying and access improvements are popular. Some Volunteers choose to just keep an eye on their chosen site, reporting back to the Warden. Others like to be involved with organising and running events, helping with school groups and Nature Clubs, or welcoming visitors to the Country Park Visitor Centres. It's up to you just how much, or how little, you wish to be involved.
We would like to hear from anyone who is interested in taking an active part in looking after our countryside, to find out more please contact us.
