Working closely with the local community, landowners and various environmental organisations, the Council's Countryside Service aims to provide a countryside that is attractive and accessible to all sections of the community, while safeguarding and enhancing its wildlife, natural and historic features.
The Countryside Service includes a team of officers who's role is to develop and maintain the countryside. This service is assisted by voluntary rangers who dedicate their spare time to helping us look after and cherish our countryside.
The area covered by the Countryside Service has expanded from the original Croal Irwell River Valley project set up in the 1970s. It now takes in many more of the countryside areas throughout the borough including Smithills Country Park, the West Pennine Moors and local nature reserves which are managed in partnership with the Bolton Wildlife Project.
