Existing schemes

On the right of this page are all the legal orders for existing, implemented alley-gating schemes in Bolton. They are organised by the year the order was made.

Alley gating explained

Alleyways (or ginnels as they are commonly known around Bolton) are very useful, especially for people who live in terraced housing. They allow you to get to the rear of your home to put out the bin and give you access to the house to carry out repairs, renovations, etc without using the front door. It is also a safe space where young children can play, without being too far from home or at risk from the danger of traffic.

Alley gating is a simple crime prevention method which involves the installation of lockable gates to the end of alleyways. The purpose of alley gating is to prevent access to these alleys by unauthorised persons and to help reduce crime.

Many burglaries occur when an intruder accesses a home though the rear of the property, using alleyways as a means to go unnoticed by neighbours or passers-by, or as an ideal escape route to leave the scene of a crime without being seen.

Most burglaries are opportunistic. A potential offender will always target a property which appears to be easy to enter and exit without detection. By placing a physical deterrent in the way, such as an alley gate, the risk of detection for a potential offender is increased.

The benefits of alley gating

There are many potential benefits to restricting the access back alleys, aside from reducing burglary, including:

  • Reduction in fly tipping and litter
  • Reducing opportunities for anti-social behaviour and youths causing annoyance
  • Reduction in arson attempts
  • A safer play area created for children
  • Improved community spirit provided through a sense of ownership
  • Cleaner, tidier alleyways
  • Reduction in criminal damage and graffiti
  • Reduction in problems associated with stray dogs
  • Reduced fear of crime, leaving residents feeling safer in their own home and more comfortable to walk around their neighbourhood.
