Community cohesion and racial equality

Community Cohesion (CC)

Bolton is committed to help and create a modern multi-ethnic. multi-cultural and multi-faith society which celebrates diversity and is based on mutual respect, tolerance and understanding.

CC goes beyond the social inclusion and equality aspect and is about having dynamic relationships between and within the different communities locally, nationally and internationally.

Bolton's objectives are to:

  • Develop an understanding of CC and the role of schools in promoting this;
  • Draft a plan to further develop school's responses;
  • Build a common vision and a sense of belonging for ALL communities that live within the Bolton borough;
  • Honour the diversity of people's backgrounds and value them positively;
  • Ensuring that people have equal opportunities regardless of their ethnicity, culture or religion;
  • Continuously developing positive and strong relationships between all the different backgrounds in the neighbourhoods, leisure activities, workplaces, education and ALL the other services that are provided by ALL the sectors within Bolton;
  • To promote and support School Twinning activities locally, nationally and internationally;
  • To work with schools and have positive actions to counter racial incidents and issues.

How can this be achieved?

By bringing together the public, private, faith, voluntary and community organisations to provide leadership and encouragement in promoting CC. This includes:

  • Helping other organisations and agencies to share good practices and improve the responses to harassment and discrimination, whatever their forms;
  • Encouraging and guiding other organisations and agencies to comply with legislation and their legal duties;
  • Valuing the diversity of local communities and challenging those who undermine cohesion;
  • Promote meaningful dialogue and mutual understanding across and within our diverse communities.
