The Disabled Children’s Service Social Work Team provides advice and support on a range of issues related to caring for a disabled child or young person. We aim to support disabled children and their families to enhance the child’s own abilities, help them to develop to their full potential and to reduce the stresses and strains that caring for a disabled child can have upon the whole family.
The social work team will work together with families to carry out an assessment of need. Needs can be met in a wide range of ways and the social worker will help families build on their strengths in order to find out what would work best for them.
Depending on the result of the assessment, the social worker may then arrange support or services for your child and your family. This could include:
- Equipment and adaptations
- Short breaks both within and outside of the family home
- Signposting to other services
- Behavioural support
- Carers support and information
- Direct Payments
- Specialist advice
- Moving on to adulthood
As with all families, needs and circumstances change so the social worker will review the assessment and support plan on a regular basis.
Social workers in this team are also responsible for disabled children and young people who are looked after by the council and they also have a duty to provide a child protection service to disabled children and young people who are at risk of harm.
