Finding your way around the site

On the left hand side of the service pages you will find a list of categories of information. These categories can be clicked on to view information.

To assist you with moving back and forth between the pages there is a ''bread crumb' menu at the top of each page - this starts with 'You are here: > Home' so you can see the path you have followed to reach your destination and use it to revisit previous pages, (or you may prefer to use your web browser's back button).

This website should enable you to find the information you want, either about services you need, or about issues you are interested in. We do not expect you to need to know how or why services are distributed amongst the authority’s various departments to find the information you want.

Looking for information

There are five main ways that you can find information on this web site:

  1. the home page
  2. your services
  3. search facility
  4. the A-Z
  5. the site map

1. The home page

This is the starting point of any website and a good place to begin browsing the site for information. The web address of Bolton Council is www.bolton.gov.uk and when you click on this web address, it is the homepage that will display on your screen. If you want to return to the homepage, just click on the word 'home' on the left hand side menu or the 'bread crumb'. On this page you will also find 'quick links' to the most frequently requested services on the left hand side.

2. Your services

This page will lead you to all information pages relating to the services offered by Bolton Council.

3. Search facility

Use the search box to type in your own word(s) and carry out a search on the website. The search box can be found in the top or right hand corner of every page. It is best to use one or two key words rather than a long sentence.

4. A-Z of services

The A-Z is another method for finding information on the site. It lists information relating to services provided by Bolton Council, in alphabetical order. Simply click on the first initial letter of the service you require.

5. Site map

Some people like to use a site map to get an overview of all the main areas of a website. Our site map can be located by clicking on the words 'Site Map' that appears on the home page of the site.

Page Layout

Pages on the Bolton council website usually take the form of the following:

  • text  - providing you with all the information you need
  • links to further information - this may take you to other parts of the Bolton site or to external sites
  • contact details - address, phone number and or email relating to the service provider
  • an electronic transaction

...or a combination of the above. Also, every page has a link to the A-Z of services, a link to contact details and a search box.
